A Fashion Lover’s Guide to the Upper West Side
While most people are familiar with lower-Manhattan and Brooklyn fashion neighborhoods such as Soho and hipster hub Williamsburg, not everyone realizes there’s a vibrant fashion scene on the Upper West Side. Not only did Lincoln Center serve as the Fashion Week venue just a few years ago, but we’ve got shops and boutiques rivaled by few other neighborhoods in town. Read on to learn about some of the best.
Fashion lovers flock to Intermix on Columbus Avenue — one of the city’s premier shopping destinations, carrying high-end labels like Victoria Beckham, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Monse. While it’s not the only Intermix outpost in the city, as there are others in areas like Soho and the Flatiron District, it’s the only one that customizes its selection to the laid-back, family-friendly vibe of the Upper West Side. (All locations reference the surrounding neighborhood’s style.) Expect an emphasis on classic pieces, like coats and blazers, and low-maintenance blouses, dresses, and trousers.
Town Shop has been carrying lingerie, swimwear, sleepwear, and shapewear since the nineteenth century; it’s so iconic that Nora Ephron wrote a whole monologue about it in one of her famous plays. New York magazine described it as the best place in NYC to be fitted for lingerie, so don’t hesitate to make an appointment with the fitting team if you need some assistance.
If you’re into thrifting, the Upper West Side offers four of the city’s top venues for secondhand clothing, accessories, and shoes. You’ll find a large location of Housing Works, carrying fun dresses, handbags, and more. There’s also an outpost of the Salvation Army on 96th Street and a Goodwill on 72nd — as well as the popular independent Unique Boutique Donation Center and Store, located on Columbus.
The Upper West Side has great destinations for eyewear — and not just locations of Lenscrafters and Sunglass Hut (although it has those too). Hit up Warby Parker, SEE, and French shop Anne & Valentin for retro-infused wayframe and cat-eye glasses and sunglasses, made of materials like acetate and metal, including prescription and non-prescription options.
