Seven NYC Summer Events to Look Forward To
Summer in NYC is an idyllic time. Mr. Softee trucks serve ice-cream cones along the sidewalk, restaurants offer outdoor dining, and thousands of people gather in the city’s public parks. One of our favorite ways to celebrate the season is by attending open-air concerts and other events that take advantage of the warm weather and languorous, laid-back atmosphere—so read on for seven summer-2020 events that we are especially excited to experience.
PS1 Warm Up parties
The Warm Up parties at MoMA’s PS1 art space are among the longest-running music programs of any NYC museum. Each brings live or electronic music from a boundary-pushing local or international artist such as Thom Yorke, DJ Premier, and Solange, all on a rotating stage with cutting-edge design by a leading NYC agency.
The SummerStage is Central Park’s own summer music festival. Headliners like Marina and the Diamonds and the B-52s are set to take the namesake stage, along with a massive, rotating lineup of salsa, rock, jazz, and soul stars that changes annually. Get ready for an evening of music and dance—and snacks provided by the on-site concessionaires.
New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks
Concerts in the Parks comprises a series of annual performances by the New York Philharmonic. In Prospect Park, Queens’ Cunningham Park, Central Park, and other green spaces across the city, enjoy performances of classical pieces from European composers like Mozart and Saint-Saens, along with New York City favorites such as Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story Suite.
New Yorkers love taking advantage of free summer-movie series like Movies with a View at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Movies in the Park at Riverside Park, and Parklife Outdoor Cinema. Classics (and cult classics) like The Princess Bride and Dazed and Confused are frequently featured. There are also screenings at private venues like the YOTEL rooftop and the Intrepid Museum.
For an unexpected twist on the NYC block party, the Department of Transportation shuts down roughly seven total miles of Park Avenue and Lafayette Street for the Summer Streets Event. For four days in August, art workshops, yoga classes, and other public programs are offered, and exciting attractions like zip lines and a giant slip-and-slide are known to appear.
Summer Restaurant Week
Looking to try out the best NYC restaurants? As a part of Summer Restaurant Week, more than 300 eateries citywide unroll prix-fixe three-course lunch and dinner menus at reasonable prices—from upscale venues like Pastis, the Sarabeth’s locations, the Modern and Candle 79, to casual establishments such as the Carmine’s and Dos Caminos locations.
Jazz Age Lawn Party
If you’ve ever longed to experience the world of The Great Gatsby, the world of the Jazz Age Lawn Party comes pretty close. Ziegfeld Follies-esque dance performances, vintage cocktails, and world-class music are on offer at this celebrated Governor’s Island lawn party hosted by jazz band Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra.
